About Me
|
About me I graduated in acupuncture in 1986 and in Chinese herbal medicine in 1991. I undertook further clinical work in Nanjing, China in 1991 and 1992. I have continued to learn and develop my practice during this time. I have lectured in Chinese medicine at several colleges both in the UK and abroad with a long association at the Northern College of Acupuncture. I have also been a board member of the accreditation committee of the European Herbal and Traditional Practitioners Alliance, the overseeing body of herbal medicine in Europe.
I was part of the teaching team that obtained the first MSc accreditation in Chinese herbal medicine in 2001. I have always been interested in research, my father was a researcher. In 2005, having obtained an MSc in Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, I won a studentship to undertake a PhD at the University of Leeds researching the effects of acupuncture on breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy care. I am also a collaborator on a feasibility study for acupuncture care for early stage breast cancer patients whilst undergoing chemotherapy, specifically looking at cancer-related fatigue with University of Tromso, Norway. Breast cancer patients, whilst receiving conventional care, may experience a wide range of symptoms from fatigue, anxiety and emotional distress to pain, insomnia and hot flushes. A diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating for women, and it takes time to absorb what it means to have this diagnosis. I believe, from my experience and my own research that acupuncture, being safe, has much to offer women at this time. Working with people while they have health problems and life crises, and helping and supporting in the resolution of problems with individuals has been a privilege which I hope will continue for many more years.
